Larfleeze #1

- Da hell's Larfleeze? My thought out loud one week ago when reading a review of a Green Lantern, I did some intense digging (used google doesn't sound as impressive) and then blow me I found his comic series in my local comic shop, the series has since finished at around 12/14 issues but i'll still review them as they are available. Turns out he is the sole owner of the Orange Light, which represents Greed and this is the story of issue 1 ....

We meet Larfleeze on the verge of ending his life, along with his butler's by floating to the furthest edge of the universe as all his possessions have been stolen. Now the majority of the issue is Larfleeze recounting how he got to where he is today whilst his butler gets in sarcastic comments, though he does admit some of it may be made up. His race the Sh'Pilkuzzians are enslaved and Larfleeze tries to escape by hiding under dead bodies not knowing they were going to the crematorium but he survives the burning. Larfleeze now causes a rebellion by the slaves but during the ensuing Slaves Vs.  Captors fight he hides away and escapes with some other Sh'Pilkuzzians via stolen transport.
They come across a map which leads them to a world called Okaara where they come across the Orange Light, Larfleeze takes out his fellow Sh'Pilkuzzians so only he can have the light, remember the Orange Lantern is Greed, then we see him put the ring on. Back in real time his Butler realises that the battery life on his power ring should've ran out but it hasn't and Larfleeze has somehow become an organic source of the Orange Energy.
An energy being in the shape of a dog appears behind them and eats Larfleeze much to his butlers delight only for Larfleeze to emerge from within the being by beating it from the inside but soon the dogs owner appears and demands to know who slayed his hound as Larfleeze gets set to fight him but his inspiration for the fight is the beings treasure.

REVIEW -
- This is a fun corner of the Lantern universe as Green Lantern can be quite serious at times but this is out there in no way taking itself seriously giving it a fun feel and thus makes it a nice counterpoint to the other Lanterns kind of like if Deadpool was an Avenger.
- I do like Larfleeze, which is a positive for the comic obviously, his aloofness or what have you, made me laugh and helped his appeal and I did like his despairing butler who I think deep down likes him really.
- I believe that Larfleeze losing his possessions actually happened in another comic, but you don't need to know about the character to get a good feel for him which again is a positive.
- Art doesn't stand out as much as say Detective Comics #35/36 do but that's not to say it's poor as I did like it, my favorite page being the full page picture when he gets his Lantern Ring.
- We got his origin, an understanding of how the two main characters work together and it was fun so all in all a thumbs up from me.

Batman Detective Comics #34

- Not a reader of Detective Comics but I bought this as it was one of the Lego cover variants, I've ordered the other 20 which will burn £60 out of my wallet, obviously I read it though and decided to review it to get more under my belt as I have yet to get a real comfortable feel for doing comics so the more experience I get then hopefully the better i'll get.

Not sure if recent events have inspired this issue in some form or fashion but I did think of the Ebola outbreak as this story is based around a virus, albeit one that 'consumes all organic manner, breaking it down and effectively eating it up', the man who created the virus Magnus Magnuson also claims to have the cure and he is apparently hiding in Eastern Europe which brings Grayson into the story as he is in Belarus interrogating a man over Plutonium when Batman contacts him asking him to find out about Magnus' whereabouts.
Back to the airport now as the Chief Of Police is placed in isolation as he has been infected by the virus, Batman is feeling the effects of the virus as well. Grayson discovers that Magnus is seeing a woman who runs Club Hell in Minsk. Batman visits the quarantined policeman and reveals that he thinks the outbreak on the plane is linked to a body that was being transported in the hold.
Grayson visits club and gets in via beating up the doorman but it turns out Magnus isn't hiding out in Eastern Europe as the lady tells him that Magnus is actually hiding in Gotham Airport and he himself is the inoculation. Back to Gotham now as we see the body that was being transported and it's badly decomposed, two people in radiation suits are there and one unmasks the other and reveals himself as Magnus, he being the unmasker not unmaskee, Batman is soon on the scene and uses gadgets to beat Magnus, as he is weak so cant fight hand to hand very well, and takes Magnus blood.
Ends with Bruce on a plane going on holiday then we go to a hospital and see the Chief Of Police who has been sent a ticket to Hawaii, he told Batman that he had cancer and wanted to die in Hawaii.

REVIEW
- On first read through I didn't think much of this issue, I read them multiple times so I can get a good feel for them before I review them, but it did grow on me in the end.
- The story is interesting as it has a realistic feeling to it, a virus on a plane is a realistic threat to us readers, however within the issue I do wish Batman would've been affected more in that say Magnus beat him down before Batman resorted to gadgets to win, I know Magnus was not like say Bane but it would of been a touch i'd of put in personally.
- On first read through I didn't like the look of it but now I bloomin' love it, as it stands out and I can't think of another issue in my collection which looks like this one does.
- Reminds me of Rocket Raccoon #5 (http://patdoesmarvel.blogspot.com/2014/11/rocket-raccoon-5.html) in that the issue is just a great looking easy read, no overarching story line where you need issues from another series to flesh out the story just a nice easy pick up. Thumbs up from me.

Deathstroke #1

- My first comic review so it may be rough in places and not be in a style I like but over time as I get used to this it should improve. I believe this is Deathstrokes 3rd series so things don't look good for this one if he's had two cancelled however Deathstroke is in the public eye now via Arrow and to a lesser extent Smallville so maybe he has the love to survive.
I'll write down the story in bullet points so what I say is in chronological order then at the end I'll give overall thoughts on the art, writing, whether it sustained my interest etc.

- First page we get Deathstroke/Slade Wilson's thoughts on things - 'Deathstroke is not who I am. It's my job and I love it.'

- He goes to Russia on a contract hit as he's been sent for a man named 'Possum'. So is Deathstroke more hitman than mercenary now?

- Meets up with a lady named Angelica who he says is a contact of his then we see some kills of Deathstroke's ordered by her.

- We see two guys dead in a hotel room and Angelica explains to Deathstroke that they wanted her to set up a trap for Deathstroke to walk into but she's apparently killed them anyway.

- There's a phone in the room transmitting a frequency only Deathstroke can hear as we see Possum is tied up in the room. This frequency knocks Deathstroke's karma out of kilter and weakens him, Possum then kills Angelica or at least I assume he has unless she is a healer as well.

- Possum goes to kill Deathstroke but ends up with a sword through his mouth, Deathstroke jumps to safety when the hotel is shot by from choppers but on the ground he meets some faceless assassins who he promptly kills though he is wounded and not healing as quickly as he'd like also we see that Possum is alive and well.

- Deathstroke fins an old man who he calls I-Ching but Deathstroke collapses at his feet. It is now 16 days later as Deathstroke awakens as I-Ching says he has brought him back from the dead and that Deathstroke must leave as nowhere is safe for him, also he is now indebted to I-Ching who will collect when the time comes.

- On the final panel of the comic we see Deathstroke who now looks younger and has no eye patch!

- It is violent but I wouldn't say gratuitously as I would expect violence in a Deathstroke comic.
- Angelica seemed to mean something to Deathstroke and yet when she was killed I had no feelings to her passing as she wasn't an established character which lessened her death for me.
- I am interested in the Possum character because he heals ala Deathstroke so I do wonder if Deathstroke will be able to kill him as i'm sure he'll pop up again.
- Deathstroke seemed more like a hired gun than a mercenary.
- Artwork wise I was impressed and one thing I liked was the backgrounds as they were good as well because I wouldn't be surprised if some artists focused more on the main picture on the page and drew the background sloppyish as it is just that background but it was good here.
- I am interested in issue 2 as it seems as though there's a man hunt for Slade, 'Nowhere is safe for him'.
- Also of note is that there are 2 variant editions and I do collect variants one I think is just his mask on the cover and the other is a Monster Variation which I'm not too impressed with, in fact it's one of those rare times where I prefer the original cover, I saw the covers on google though and not in my local comic shop.
