- Da hell's Larfleeze? My thought out loud one week ago when reading a review of a Green Lantern, I did some intense digging (used google doesn't sound as impressive) and then blow me I found his comic series in my local comic shop, the series has since finished at around 12/14 issues but i'll still review them as they are available. Turns out he is the sole owner of the Orange Light, which represents Greed and this is the story of issue 1 ....
We meet Larfleeze on the verge of ending his life, along with his butler's by floating to the furthest edge of the universe as all his possessions have been stolen. Now the majority of the issue is Larfleeze recounting how he got to where he is today whilst his butler gets in sarcastic comments, though he does admit some of it may be made up. His race the Sh'Pilkuzzians are enslaved and Larfleeze tries to escape by hiding under dead bodies not knowing they were going to the crematorium but he survives the burning. Larfleeze now causes a rebellion by the slaves but during the ensuing Slaves Vs. Captors fight he hides away and escapes with some other Sh'Pilkuzzians via stolen transport.
They come across a map which leads them to a world called Okaara where they come across the Orange Light, Larfleeze takes out his fellow Sh'Pilkuzzians so only he can have the light, remember the Orange Lantern is Greed, then we see him put the ring on. Back in real time his Butler realises that the battery life on his power ring should've ran out but it hasn't and Larfleeze has somehow become an organic source of the Orange Energy.
An energy being in the shape of a dog appears behind them and eats Larfleeze much to his butlers delight only for Larfleeze to emerge from within the being by beating it from the inside but soon the dogs owner appears and demands to know who slayed his hound as Larfleeze gets set to fight him but his inspiration for the fight is the beings treasure.
REVIEW -
- This is a fun corner of the Lantern universe as Green Lantern can be quite serious at times but this is out there in no way taking itself seriously giving it a fun feel and thus makes it a nice counterpoint to the other Lanterns kind of like if Deadpool was an Avenger.
- I do like Larfleeze, which is a positive for the comic obviously, his aloofness or what have you, made me laugh and helped his appeal and I did like his despairing butler who I think deep down likes him really.
- I believe that Larfleeze losing his possessions actually happened in another comic, but you don't need to know about the character to get a good feel for him which again is a positive.
- Art doesn't stand out as much as say Detective Comics #35/36 do but that's not to say it's poor as I did like it, my favorite page being the full page picture when he gets his Lantern Ring.
- We got his origin, an understanding of how the two main characters work together and it was fun so all in all a thumbs up from me.
